it is dawn upon round mountain.
before us, a circle of stones waits.
their soft gray bodies form a threshold β€”
the doorsill where the two worlds meet.

within the doorsill, mountains whisper.
a heron glides through the tall grass.
fox pauses, clouds gather.
become hawk: listen, and bring it back.

With big joy and much gratitude, my dear friend and co-guide Annette and I now offer guided, wilderness rites of passage ceremonies in the Sierra Nevada mountains outside Nevada City πŸŒ€οΈ

What does wilderness rites of passage mean?
This work is a living echo of a very old, pancultural movement into nature, comprised of three stages:

severance β€” an intentional step away from our normal lives and their attachments and tethers
threshold β€” a conscious entrance into a period of time alone in nature
incorporation β€” a return back to our communities with the truths that have been granted us, gifted us, and offered to us from the land

This practice weaves us back into intimacy and reciprocity with the natural world. It is a conversation that is as necessary now as ever. To undergo a rite of passage as part of a group of humans is to hear and witness the stories that are asking to be told from the land. We look to and honor the natural world as our original mirror and most guide. These ceremonies resemble medicine work, but with nature itself as the alchemical agent.

It’s always worth saying that this sort of conversation with land is accessible not only through organized ceremony, but through the simple, everyday walked we take to our beloved, nearby places. We know how to do this, deep in our bones. Ceremony is just one way of remembering.

Wilderness rites of passage work has been a true North Star, creative ally, and ballast for me as an adolescent, adult and especially as an artist. With huge gratitude for the many guides (human and more-than-human) who have helped me jump high enough to glimpse the sacred mountains, I am honored to be stepping through my own threshold this Summer and donning the well-loved, unassuming, wind-battered hat of a wilderness ceremony guide.

Creative cycles, which hide in plain site everywhere in the natural world, are the beating heart of this work. Nothing has been more helpful for me as an artist than re-wilding my inner sense of cyclical movement and granting depth and validity to my inner seasons. Each of our ceremonies centers the wisdom of the external season’s medicine and honors whatever stage of the creative cycle we each find ourselves in. All seasons offer profound medicine.
